Day 1 of my first proper trip to Germany. Koln Messe/Deutz, Deutzerfeld depot, Gremberg yard & depot, Koln Sud, and Koln West. Gremberg yard was surprisingly quiet, I'll put that down to being there on a Monday morning before the weeks freight had really got moving. A good walk around the depot itself more than made up for it, with great access for photos, and 66 locos recorded.

Day 2 and I decided to venture north to check out Oberhausen Osterfeld Sud. I was going on 1 review of 6-8 freights and hour (I actually had 38 in 5 1/2 hours so not a bad estimate), but mainly just a wild stab from looking at various rail maps and Google Earth! The area around here from Duisberg across to Dortmund has freight lines and yards scattered all over the place and I did try a couple of other spots that I thought might be worth a visit. Wanne Eickel to the east of Oberhausen has a massive yard and depot but there's no chance of getting near the place as there's running tracks on all sides (although there are some locos stabled adjacent to the platform). I also went to Herne for a short stop due to it's location, but not nearly as busy as I'd hoped. All photos here are from Osterfeld Sud unless I've noted otherwise.

Day 3 and another bash around the local Cologne area. Started off with a quick visit to Deutzerfeld depot as I'd passed it on the train the night before and noticed a 103 outside the shed. Luckily it was still there so managed to get a couple of photos. After this down to Gremberg yard for a couple of hours to see if things were any busier than Monday. They certainly were, and in just over 2 hours I'd noted 17 freight and 9 light loco movements. As the sun moved round there was a quick break for lunch, then spent the rest of the day on Koln Sud and Koln West, recording 87 locos in 6 hours, including 44 freights. Not bad for an April Fool's Day!

Another full day around the Cologne area as there's so much freight it seems a waste to go anywhere else. I ventured down to the rail bridge that takes the freight only line across the river as I thought it may make an interesting choice for photos. Turned out to be a disappointment in the end, there's plenty of freight to be seen but an annoying row of street lights and railings between the footpath and the track really get in the way! Headed back to Koln Sud and West for pretty much constant freight (and much clearer photos), and got a very nice surprise in the form of 140423 still carrying the old blue and cream colour scheme.

Day 5 of my trip to Germany. Had a very early start and got to Aachen West just after 8am. There was track work at the south entrance of the yard with workmen and vehicles everywhere, and combined with low sun and the usual freight yard clutter, made for a fairly poor session. Just to make matters worse I had some problems with my camera, and both sets of spare batteries also turned out to be dud! Got a few photos but certainly somewhere to add to my list of places to revisit at a later date for a 2nd attempt.

After the rather annoying visit to Aachen West I decided to go back to Oberhausen Osterfeld Sud as the visit earlier in the week had been quite busy. Another very enjoyable session was had, and in 5 1/2 hours I'd noted 44 freights and 13 light locos. The period from 14:30 to 15:50 was of particular interest as it produced 12 freights with 9 different types of loco, 10 different operators, and all 12 locos carrying different liveries
I found a slightly better position for photos than earlier in the week, with a bit less plant life to contend with! The spot I had was also quite close to the nearest running line as you can see from some of the photos, if you ever go here just be careful not to have a lapse in concentration as some of the trains can sneak up rather quickly!

Saturday morning and time to come home. I didn't have time for anything special but managed to get a few snaps from Koln Hbf while I was waiting for my train back through Belgium to the UK. The large building you can see in the background on some photos that says "Saturn" is actually the brand new Azimut Hotel. I stayed here for the week I was in Germany and can thoroughly recommend it. As an added bonus it's about 30 seconds walk from Hansaring station so you can get from your room to Koln Hbf in less than 5 minutes!

No visit to Hamburg would be complete without visiting the "Miniatur Wunderland" model railway. Even if you don't like model railways you must agree this is pretty awesome. If you've never had the chance to visit here's a few mind blowing facts about the place just to give you an idea of how big it is, and it's still not finished!
So far it's taken more than 550000 hours to build 1150 sq m of layout, with 12km of track, 890 trains, 1200 signals, 2500 points, 295000 working lights, 200000 people, 215000 tress, and all controlled by 40 computers!
In my opinion it's not the trains that are the attraction here, it's the sheer detail thats gone into all the scenery. Here's a selection of some of the things I liked, you could spend days here and still keep noticing new things!

Day 1 of my summer trip to Germany. I flew into Hamburg on the Sunday afternoon so just a couple of hours to potter about and get my bearings. Nice to see a couple of double headed IC services with pairs of 218s on, and also the rare sight of a freight through Hamburg Hbf, although it was a Sunday engineers train so not sure if that counts? I also popped down to Harburg just to see what it was like as I'd be spending quite alot of time there over the next couple of days. Had 3 freights in less than an hour which isn't bad for a Sunday.

LAST UPDATED 25/10/09. CURRENTLY CONTAINS 82 PHOTOS.
Day 2 of my summer trip to Germany. From the lack of freight on Monday morning when I last visited Germany I decided a depot visit was the best way to spend the morning. A quick trip down to Maschen produced 99 locos including a single line of 22 stored locos, 17 of which were class 140s. After this I took the obvious choice and spent the rest of the day at Hamburg Harburg. This was my first weekday visit here and it didn't disappoint. 7 hours gave me just over 50 freight, and 126 locos. Not a bad start to the week, around 260 locos in total for the day!

As I was in Hamburg there was really only one choice for how to spend the day. Down to Harburg station for an all day freight-a-thon! It's a slightly frustrating place as freight trains pass on both sides of the station and you can't really position yourself in a spot where you can get a clear view of everything. I think I managed to make the best of it especially as there was some quite heavy rain in the morning. I was there for about 10 hours in total and saw somewhere around 115 freight (I haven't mistyped that, it was 115!), and well over 200 locos in total. The only real problem of the day was finding a dull period to go off and get some lunch. There's definately a gap in the market for a decent food stall on this station! All photos are from Harburg unless stated otherwise.

LAST UPDATED 28/10/09. CURRENTLY CONTAINS 71 PHOTOS.
I had an early start as I was moving down from Hamburg to Frankfurt, via Hannover. I had a quick trip out to Seelze on route, which although very busy, isn't particularly good for photos as it's just a footbridge over the freight yard. After this I went across the other side of Hannover to Lehrte as I'd seen plenty of good photos from here. The station itself is a bit of a tangle of weeds, trees, and masts, but there are some good photo opportunities providing the sun is in the right direction, and you're in the right place at the right time. It's probably a better location in the spring before the weeds have started growing, I'm over 6 foot and some of the plantlife on the north end of the platform was taller than me!

As I was staying in Frankfurt I took the opportunity to travel the short distance out to Mainz Bischofsheim. I started the day with morning rush hour at Frankfurt Hbf, then the quick 30 minute journey out to Bischofsheim. I had a walk around the depot although there wasn't much there as it's quite small. I counted 21 locos in the depot, and at least 8 of those were stored. The rest of the day I spent up near the station, on the south side of the line. It's quite a good spot to get good unobstructed photos of passing trains, and in 8 hours I saw just short of 50 freight. Not a bad day by my counting!

LAST UPDATED 26/10/09. CURRENTLY CONTAINS 80 PHOTOS.
The last full day of my trip and I'd planned to venture away from Frankfurt and visit Nürnberg. It was a great day, although not as much freight as I had hoped for. To start off with I had a visit to Nürnberg Rbf depot & yard. This place truly is massive, and if you're into foreign wagons you could spend all day walking around here. The loco depot itself is based around two roundhouses, and on my visit I noted 85 locos, and that was just the ones I could identify. After this I went to the DB museum (separate collection), then the RE depot and site of the former loco shed at Nürnberg West, and finally out for a few hours at Fürth. This was the only disappointment of the day as there was engineering works blocking 3 out of the 6 lines through the station, and sadly only 11 freight in 4 hours.

LAST UPDATED 24/10/09. CURRENTLY CONTAINS 19 PHOTOS.
As I was visiting the historic city of Nürnberg for the day I couldn't miss the chance to visit the DB museum. There's a huge amount of stuff on display here, although not actually that many locomotives (compared the the NRM at York for example), mainly due to the devastating fire in 2005 that destroyed many of the original exhibits. Nevertheless, a great way to spend a couple of hours, especially as it was a particularly hot day and the museum was nice and cool! It's not that good for photos as the locos themselves are very close together, and brush up on your German as there's no translations to English.

The final day of my German trip. Most of the day was spent shopping and sampling the local beers, but I did have a few hours spare in the morning before heading off to the airport. I managed a walk round the loco depot to the west of Frankfurt Hbf, I know it was a Saturday morning but I think I may have been the only person there! Nice to see some of the older loco types up close and personal, including classes 110, 181, & 218.

A great day out whilst on holiday in Thailand, the infamous bridge over the river Kwai. It was a VERY over-crowded train ride but the scenery more than made up for it. It's definately a "must go to" place if you ever get the chance, it took us about 2 hours from Bangkok. Photos here of a few of the old steam locos, the bridge itself, and some of the stunning scenery along the line.

Some photos from a slightly more tropical location than most of my trips, our 2009 holiday to Thailand. Sorry they're not the best photos ever, I didn't have my proper camera with me so had to make do with my little Casio Exilim. We used the trains quite a bit as it's a very cheap (although not that quick) way of getting around the country. There's a variety of locations here including Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Trang, and a visit to Bang Sue depot on the outskirts of Bangkok. After convincing the staff I was a railway enthusiast and not a journalist they were very happy to help, and I even had a guided tour around the scrap compound which contained a good selection of loco types no longer in service. Other photos include the Thai Railfan Museum, the depot outside of Hualampong station in Bangkok, and some of the old steam locos to be found dotted around the country.

Just a few shots from a trip over to France I had as a teenager. I think it must have been around the 20th May, certainly 1992, as we were on our way back from the newly opened Euro Disney resort. These shots were taken at a small town called Bully-les-Mines. If you look on Google Earth the yard is still there (although totally empty) and there's a shunter loco in the same position, possibly even the same one!
